Planning Updates

Summer 2024

students at fountain in Sunken GardenWith unanimous support from the reconvened Measure G task force, the college will move forward with planning for two new buildings to be constructed with bond funds, in a phased approach:

  • In the first phase, the college will develop plans for a new Creative Arts facility on the site of the outdated Flint Center, which is being demolished this summer.
  • In a second phase, the college will finalize earlier planning for a new Services for Students Building on the site of the A Quad, where the Creative Arts Division has been housed.

The approach, which Interim President Christina G. Espinosa-Pieb outlined during a July 9 task force meeting, draws on earlier task force recommendations as described in the Megaproject Options slide presentation from October 2023. While the college will begin work on developing plans and budgets, Espinosa-Pieb emphasized that the process will include input from the Creative Arts Division.

Espinosa-Pieb reconvened the task force in June after the Foothill-De Anza district Board of Trustees' decision on May 6, 2024 to re-allocate Measure G funds that had been earmarked for construction of a new Event Center on the Flint Center site. The board decision provided $55 million to De Anza for use as prioritized by the college, in addition to earlier allocations for a Services for Students Building and other projects.

The board's action came on a motion by Trustee Peter Landsberger, who added the caveat that the board reserves discretion to reallocate other Measure G funds that were designated for housing, if  essential infrastructure needs arise.

Background on Measure G

Ballot Measure G, approved by Foothill-De Anza district voters in 2020, authorized bonds to raise up to $898 million to upgrade and repair facilities, classrooms and labs, and to acquire and construct facilities, equipment and sites for both De Anza and Foothill College.

At De Anza, the bond-funded work includes demolition of the outdated Flint Center – which the district decided in 2019 to close, after considering costs of seismic upgrades and other needed improvements – and construction of new infrastructure to serve the campus.

Additional projects include

  • Upgrading fire alarm and fire suppression systems
  • Modernizing building interiors and exteriors
  • Renovating restrooms in several buildings
  • Improving roadways and pathways
  • Converting an existing athletic field to a competition facility for the Beach Volleyball athletics team
