Physical Education & Athletics Division

Message from the Dean

Welcome!

My name is Rich Schroeder, and I am the dean of the Physical Education and Athletics Division at De Anza College. Our division is staffed by 14 full-time certificated instructors and 23 part-time instructors, a classified staff of six full time and two part time, administered by a full-time dean. We offer 110 different classes, not including 14 dance courses which are cross listed with Physical Education, but are taught by Creative Arts Division staff and one lecture course cross listed with Biological and Health Sciences.

We offer 68 different activity courses, from aerobics to Tai Chi. Our instructors are constantly updating skills by attending workshops and certification courses and writing new curriculum as our demographic changes. Examples of new courses include: Pilates Mat Exercise, Yoga, Body Sculpting and Indoor Cycling. We are finishing an aerobic Tai Chi class and are in discussion about other activities.

If you have suggestions for new offerings, please send me an email at schroederrich@deanza.edu with information about the activity. There are an additional 28 courses that cater mostly to athletes, six massage therapy courses, four personal trainer courses, one sports medicine and three “major’s” courses.

The Athletics Department offers 19 intercollegiate sports (nine men’s and 10 women’s) with close to 375 student athletes. In 2008, the Bud Ottmar trophy came back to De Anza College. This is a perpetual trophy awarded by the Coast Conference for athletic excellence.

In addition to our other offerings we offer two certifications plus an AA degree in Massage Therapy and another Certificate of Completion in Personal Training.
