Library Opens First Day of Winter Quarter
The newly renovated Library will reopen on Monday, Jan. 4, the first day of winter quarter.
"I think students will be pleased with how light and open it is and how inviting the space is for both group and individual study," said Donna Jones-Dulin, associate vice president of College Operations.
Technology-enhanced group study rooms and collaboration areas are just one feature of the renovation. The entire interior has been modernized and upgraded. Other features include upgraded wireless access and additional electrical outlets for bringing your own laptop or tablet.
"We are really excited for students, faculty and staff to return to the main library building," said Lorrie Ranck, dean of Learning Resources. "We’ve been intentionally student-driven in designing all the various spaces in a way that will benefit all who enter the doors."

Marco Monroy, DASB President
Marco Monroy, president of the De Anza Associated Student Body Senate (DASB), is originally from a small town in northern Mexico. When he was contemplating college in the States, his family in California recommended De Anza.
“Coming in I wasn’t sure what two-year colleges were or how they worked,” Monroy said. “But honestly, my experience has been mind-blowing.”
From the moment he arrived, Monroy knew he wanted to be involved in student government.
“I saw all the amazing programs for students here, and found out so many are student-run or student-initiated,” he added. “I really wanted to be a part of that, and help make De Anza a better school for all the students here.”
Monroy was elected DASB president last spring quarter. Since he took office, he has worked to make the Senate more efficient and inclusive. He’s also been reaching out to student governments at other colleges, including Foothill. The DASB has attended several conferences in Sacramento this year and attended meetings of the Student Senate for California Community Colleges.
“Having an active student government on campus is important not only to have events for students, by students, but also to have representation on a statewide level,” Monroy said.
For winter quarter, Monroy and the Senate are planning a Taco Tuesday de-stress event for the week before finals. They also hope to host a job and internship fair with representation from prominent Silicon Valley companies, and will continue to build relationships with other student governments.
Monroy recently submitted his applications to UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC San Diego and several private schools on the East Coast. He plans to study international relations, and hopes to apply the lessons he’s learned at De Anza to a future career with the United Nations.
“De Anza is a great school because it gives you the flexibility to do whatever you want,” he said. “It’s customizable to every single student.”

Murphy writes: "My personal political engagement is framed by the public mission of my college, and my capacity to affect civic dialogue depends on the public reputation of my institution—De Anza College—as a place where students regularly engage in civic activism." Read the full article.
Raise a Racket and Rally for Men's Tennis
In the continuing effort to fund the men's tennis endowment, the Athletics department has started a new fundraising campaign, "Rally for Tennis."
Supporters can become a permanent part of the campaign by purchasing an engraved brick. The bricks will become part of a new patio near the entrance to the tennis courts. This endowment will ensure that De Anza's current and future student athletes have a chance to compete.
"I believe that our program has always provided many local students with a unique opportunity to excel as student-athletes," said Coleen Lee-Wheat, dean of Athletics and Physical Education. "They have become teaching pros in the area, transferred successfully across the nation to continue their educations, and are now among our nation's working professionals. Let's support the endowment for this unique program."
Nursing Student Wins $5,000 Kaider Scholarship

Jacqueline Ramos and Kathleen Austin, director of Diagnostic Medical Sonography at
Foothill, recently surprised student Laurel Fee with the $5,000 Kaider Scholarship.
The scholarship was established by philanthropists Steven and Lola Kaider to assist women with educational expenses as they returned to school to complete programs and serve in health care careers.
Fee is a first-year nursing student. She received a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering from Cal Tech, but decided to pursue a career in nursing to help others.
